End of the PFRA Era

In 2007 the PFRA began a program of retreat from its responsibilities on the south slopes of the Cypress Hills. By 2016 the PFRA will have stopped operating and maintaining irrigation delivery infrastructure which includes ditch riding, canals, structures, drains and roads. This change was based on the view that operating an irrigation project was no longer a federal government responsibility. Southwest Saskatchewan was the only place in Canada where the federal government served this function.
